The legendary Golden Gate Bridge, when completed in 1937, was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Spanning 8,891 feet, this infamous landmark, with its elegant Art Deco design, cost $35 million depression-era dollars. The bridge is nicknamed “Iron Horse” in honor of Edward Stanley, the ironworker who drove the last rivet during a ceremony of completion on April 27th, 1937.
