"Bandon-by-the-Sea Stacks"

The exceptional sandy beaches of southern Oregon are known for their beauty, and their public accessibility. They also sport fantastic examples of amazing sea stacks, the haunting geological remnants of marine terraces being eroded by the power of the salty Pacific Ocean.

These ancient markers of time silently watch the diminishing sun light from their view along this Bandon, Oregon beach. The weather, stormy, cold and windy, delivered intense color just before the clouds opened up and poured with rain.

This is an amazing capture. I was curious though, because the colors are so vived, was this done as an HDR composite image or a single shot with time lapse and a polarizing filter? Was there any color correction or anything done in a Photoshop-like program or is this the actual original capture? I guess this question really applies to many of your beautiful captures, not just this one. Thanks!

Roshan, thank you. To answer your questions, this is a long exposure as I wanted to capture the movement of the tide as it streaked back out across the shallow beach. That lends the "feel" to the sky and yes, I did use a gradient 3-stop ND filter to help control the light (in comparison to the foreground) in conjunction with a polarizer. This is a common setup for many of my landscape images.

Hey Stephen. I just got a Cokin Pro-Z filter holder and some Hi-tech ND Grads (.3, .6 & .9). I wonder how you deal with things popping up over the horizon line, like these rocks. Shouldn't the ND grad filter make the top part of the rock darker? How do you deal with that?
